Harry’s Winston Razor
As my first new post to the relaunch of Adrian’s Gear website, I wanted to write about life in lockdown and how I’ve managed. This will hopefully not only give you a great review but also some inspiration for a healthy body and mind during these times.
I have been doing some small purchases every week. Nothing expensive—ten to twenty dollars and for the fact that I have something to look forward to coming to me. It also is giving my some good items to write about here.
First up, a razor from Harry’s. If you’re not familiar with them, they started out as a subscription razor blade company for men. They have good quality razors, good prices, nice design, and now also have other grooming products like soaps and moisturizers.
I’ve been with them for years and find little more satisfying than shaving when it comes to personal grooming. It feels great to shave off itchy facial hair and a smooth face and jaw is really nice.
I also have found a nice personal grooming routine really boosts my spirits during this isolation. Taking a shower, shaving, cleaning up for the day is a nice moment of zen when I can feel a bit anxious with the state of affairs in which we find ourselves.
Putting these two ideas together, one of my purchases for my personal grooming was a new razor from Harry’s, the Winston. It is the premier razor made from metal with a chrome-like shine. It is a beautifully designed razor—minimalist and classic while so many other men’s razors look like something designed for a motorcycle or Formula 1 race car.
It was a small gift to myself—I did not need to replace my forest green Harry’s razor (a special edition that was only available through J. Crew) but it is lovely and feels great in the hand.
Cool to the touch but warms nicely in the hand as metal does. And the weight is what makes it nicer to use than the plastic variations of Harry’s razors. They, too, are nice, but this takes the razor’s design to a higher premium feel.
With rubber grips on the top and bottom, it makes what otherwise would be a slick razor and makes it a bit easier to hold on to. Ergonomics are something I find very valuable with all device I use.
Harry’s razors come out to be under two dollars a piece when purchased in bulk of sixteen. That lasts me a fair amount of time so rarely do I get more than a few deliveries a year. But switching out one’s razor is quite simple. Just behind the head one finds a collar that, when pushed away rom the handle, removes the razor. A new one slides on and ready for use. A design brilliantly simple.
I also own the Harry’s razor stand. It is a nifty mat-finish metal block in which one can stand their razor. The only opportunity of this razor is that the handle is not as wide as the previous razors I have purchased from Harry’s making it sit a little loose. Perhaps they have an updated version of this stand... I may have to update.
For only twenty dollars, and twenty five for a starter kit (two additional razors and shaving gel, and a travel cover), this was my treat to myself and for my grooming needs.
If you want to treat yourself and make grooming a fine art of a day in lockdown, I recommend this razor. And it certainly would make a great gift for a friend or loved one. Surprise them with something nice for their grooming needs.
The Winston razor looks like something your grandfather would have passed down to you as a treasure, right of passage to becoming a man while the designers also instilled some modern design and elements to make it function for the 21st century.
